Why are they carrying their bikes?

In most cycling events, the competitor stays on the bike and pedals like mad. 
However in cyclo-cross, quickly hopping on and off your bicycle is a skill that can win races.  Barriers, hills, mud, sand, and other obstacles are designed into the course to provide challenges to the cyclists and entertainment for the spectators.
